Factors to Consider When Buying the Best Kerosene Heater

Can you use diesel in a kerosene heater?

Contents

A kerosene heater can burn diesel as long as you know how to do it safely. Diesel burns at higher temperatures than kerosene. It will deposit more carbon on your wick. For better combustion of your diesel, you will need:

  • Pure cotton or fiberglass wick
  • Diesel additives such as highly pure isopropyl alcohol help the diesel to burn more efficiently.

What causes bad odor in kerosene heaters?

The bad odor after using the heater can be caused by the following:

  • Low-grade fuel
  • Fuel with high levels of sulfur
  • Old fuel

Operating the heater at a low-temperature setting can also cause bad odors due to incomplete combustion. Moreover, fuel spilled on other parts of the heater during re-fuelling also causes bad odors when the heater becomes hot.

Why won’t my kerosene heater stay burning for a long time?

This may be due to improper soaking of a new wick in fuel before installation. Proper soaking ensures that there is a seamless capillary flow of the fuel in the wick. This ensures that kerosene vapor is always available for burning. Improper soaking results in air bubbles within the wick. In turn, it hinders the flow of fuel thus interrupting the burning. Always soak your wick in fuel an hour before installation.

If the problem arises after the first fuel tank has been depleted, then the problem may be fuel-related.

Why is my kerosene heater smoking after lighting?

Always ensure that you use K-1 kerosene in your heater. Don’t use other types of highly combusting fuel like gasoline.

A smoky flame is an indicator that the air-fuel ratio is wrong. Make sure that you have placed the chimney at the right position. Otherwise, the orange flame will be one-sided. If the flame is too high, adjust the wick with the wick adjustment knob.

If the problem persists, it might be due to the burner cylinder. Check it after the heater has cooled. Clean up clogged holes. If there are buckled pieces then they should be replaced. Always ensure the wick has been properly installed. It should also be placed at the proper height.

If you find no problem, then you should have it checked.

Why won’t my kerosene heater light?

Make sure that you used high-quality K-1 kerosene. The wick should also be soaked upright in the fuel tank for at least an hour so that it is saturated with fuel.

Check that the igniter is positioned just above the wick too. If the igniter is not a bright orange, then replace the batteries. It should be non-alkaline batteries. If the igniter is not working after a battery change, replace it because the filament may be blown.

Why won’t my igniter glow?

This is because the batteries are probably dead. If you’re experiencing this, replace them with non-alkaline batteries. It’s best to avoid alkaline batteries because the initial jolt is too strong and can blow the filament. If the problem persists after battery replacement, then the filament is most likely burnt out. It is time to replace the igniter.

To prevent igniter burnout, do not allow it to stay in the flame after ignition.

Why buy a kerosene heater?

Kerosene heaters are suitable for spaces that are difficult to heat up such as garages and the barn. They can be used to heat individual rooms when the thermostat has been turned off.

It is also important in keeping pipes from freezing or when thawing frozen pipes. It also acts as a backup source of heat when there is a blackout.

How much is a kerosene heater?

The price of a kerosene heater will vary depending on various factors. You can purchase decent kerosene heaters beginning at $350.
