This is one of the easiest methods on how to drain and clean a hot tub. But, likely, you might not have this. First, a pump isn’t included when you purchase a hot tub. You need to buy it separately, so it’s an additional expense.

Even if you purchase this, you need to visit the store and search for a pump that is compatible with your hot tub. This will require patience and time since all you want to do is to drain your tub and start cleaning it.

Use a Hose

If you don’t have a pump, you can drain your hot tub using a simple garden hose found in your home. Here are the general steps on how to use this method:

  1. Make sure that your hot tub is unplugged. When you take out hot water when your tub is still on, you can have a more difficult time draining it.
  2. After you have made sure that your tub is turned off and the water has cooled down, connect your hose to the water bib. The water bib is the faucet often found on one side or at the back of your house.
  3. Fix your hose on your water bib.
  4. Fill the hose with as much water as possible. Doing this will help remove the remaining air bubbles blocking your hose line. So, you have to remove as many air bubbles as possible.
  5. Turn the water off at your hose bib if there’s flow in your tub.
  6. Keep the end of your house immersed in the tub. This is a very important step because you need to start all over again if you miss doing this.
  7. Bend your hose after you switch the water off and ensure that one end remains immersed in the hot tub. Do this a few feet underneath the connection of your hose bib to keep the water sealed in the hose for now.
  8. Disconnect the faucet bib and the hose. Make sure to keep the bend in your hose until you reach the end underneath the level of your tub. That’s because you would want to utilize gravity and allow the water to drain.
  9. Determine where you want to drain the water after you have the bent end you’re holding underneath the level of your tub. It’s best to do it away from foot traffic.

Flush and Clean Hot Tub Pipes

One good method to learn how to drain a hot tub for winter is to clean your likes using a pipe cleaner or flush. This is to remove the possible build-up of bacteria or biofilm in your pipes. You have to make sure to do the instructions provided in every product. But, there’s a basic way of using a pipe cleaner.

  1. Take your hot tub filters off.
  2. Fully turn on your jets.
  3. Put the recommended amount of pipe cleaner in your filter housing and let the jets operate for 15 to 30 minutes.

Refill Your Hot Tub

You can use a soft clean cloth to wipe the filter compartment and shell now that you’ve drained your tub. You can also wash your hot tub filters when you do this.

You just put your hose in the filter housing and turn it on to refill your tub. You also have to avoid an airlock. Airlock happens when air gets trapped in the plumbing lines, resulting in water not having a good flow. You might also see a “flow” error if this happens.

You can reduce the risk of this by filling the filter housing to fill the pipes first after turning on the filter housing.
