How to Maintain a Hot Tub Without Chemicals?

By Leave a Comment

Happy couple relax clean hot tub

While some don’t mind using chemicals for their hot tub, others just don’t want to, and as much as possible, would like just to use the natural way.

However, how to maintain a hot tub without chemicals when it’s the usual routine when keeping the water safe and clean? Let’s find out.

  • Replace the Filter Cartridge Often

While this is inconvenient and quite pricey, if you’re adamant about keeping things natural, you can just simply replace your filter cartridge as often as you can.

Those who use chlorine or bromine change their cartridge too but only after a long time. However, when you don’t use any of these, you have to change them within 6 to 12 months.

When changing your filter with a newer one, there are dimensions and other factors to consider, thus giving you a variety. Of course, some will be pricier since they’ll have more surface area and pleats.

However, they’re better at filtering, so you can opt for this since you’re not using chemicals, and you need the extra filtering power anyway.

  • Drain Your Hot Tub Frequently

Aside from changing your filter cartridge, you have to drain your hot tub all the time. For those without chemicals, you can empty your tub every 4 to 6 months. However, if you use it frequently, it’s ideal to do it within 2 to 3 months.

You may not use chemicals in your water directly. Still, when draining, you’re encouraged to use a purging solution that helps remove clogged-up dirt in the pipes, hoses, and jets of your tub. Using a jet can also remove any excess biofilms on the surface.

  • Use Minerals, Ozone, and Non-Chlorine Shock

These may not be as natural as manually cleaning your tub, but specific tools are recommended to keep the water safe. You can opt for more potent chemicals like chlorine and bromine. However, ideally, it’s better to use mineral and ozone sanitizers for this.

These are to ensure that no bacteria or viruses are in your water. Without these, you’ll likely have disease-causing bacteria living in your tub. Thus, check on your ozone sanitizer every day and ensure it’s working.

As per your mineral sanitizer, you should follow the requirements as directed in its instruction manual for more effective results.

Lastly, to make sure everything is clean, using non-chlorine shock can treat and oxidize your water. Adding a few tablespoons of this can already go a long way in keeping your hot tub’s water clean.

  • Keep the Water Balanced

The next thing to keep in mind is to keep the water balanced. You can check the levels of pH, alkalinity, and hardness level by using fresh reagents or test strips twice every week.

The pH level should be around 7.2-7.5, the alkalinity between 180-220 ppm, and the hardness at 180-220 ppm.

Find natural water balance products in your local shop or online and apply when needed, or you can always change your water when necessary. It will also help if you’re going to shower before entering the water to maintain its cleanliness and chemical levels.

Conclusion

The best hot tubs are those that are always clean and safe. If you’re not too keen on using harsh chemicals, the tips mentioned above can surely help you.
